How do I change my major as an international student?
You should check with your immigration advisor prior to planning to change your academic program. The new D/S rule, effective September 15th, 2026, restricts some academic changes for first year students below the graduate level, and for graduate students. It may be possible for you to change your major on F-1 or J-1 status, but you must follow the right steps so your SEVIS record stays accurate. Most importantly, tell your international student office so they can update SEVIS accordingly.
The steps
The steps will vary depending on your school, but in general, academic decisions like changing a major start with your academic advisor or department. Consult with them for information about how changing your major would impact your degree progress, funding, etc. If it seems feasible to move forward, check in with your international office about the major change. Your international office will advise you of anything they need for updating your SEVIS record and issuing a revised I-20 or DS-2019 with the new major. If everything is good from the perspective of the international office, then move forward with the school’s official process for changing your major.
Note: In general, it’s always safest to check in with your DSO/ARO before making any changes to your academic plan (course load, major, degree level, etc.), as some changes require authorization in SEVIS before the change is made.
