Reduced course load (RCL) in F-1 status

F-1 students must normally be full-time in fall and spring, but you may qualify for a Reduced Course Load (RCL) for specific academic, medical, or final-semester reasons. This may be ok only with your DSO's approval before you drop any classes.

When an RCL may apply

  • Academic difficulties (e.g., adjusting to English or U.S. classroom expectations) — typically only your first semester

  • Medical reasons — backed by documentation from a licensed physician, doctor of osteopathy, or (clinical) psychologist. Must be renewed each term and is capped at 12 months per degree level.

  • Final semester — when you only need a few credits to graduate

How to do it right

Talk with your DSO first; they'll confirm whether your situation qualifies and authorize the RCL in SEVIS. Dropping below full-time without approval is a status violation and can lead to losing your status, needing reinstatement, or starting a new program with a new SEVIS record. Reach out early to your DSO, advisor, or campus support.
