What are the cross-cultural exchange requirements of a J-1 program?
Every J-1 program must include meaningful cross-cultural exchange opportunities. These should be chances to engage with U.S. culture and share your own. Your sponsor facilitates and documents it (in an annual report to the State Department), and you're expected to participate in good faith.
How sponsors document it
Orientation sessions covering U.S. culture, laws, and community norms
Organized cultural, educational, or community activities
Records of participation/attendance
Program materials describing the cross-cultural components
What academic participants might do
Campus cultural events, sports, lectures, or workshops
Engaging with students, faculty, or staff beyond your research group
Community activities, volunteering, or local events
Sharing your home culture via presentations or classroom visits
Programs run by your international office or department
There's no single required activity — the expectation is ongoing, good-faith engagement. The primary responsibility rests with your sponsor, and gaps can raise compliance concerns in State Department reviews.
