What does “extraordinary ability” mean for an O-1 visa?

For science, education, business, or athletics, it means being among the small percentage at the very top of your field. You qualify by showing a major internationally recognized award (like a Nobel Prize) or by meeting at least 3 of 8 evidentiary criteria — after which USCIS weighs the totality of your evidence.

The 8 criteria (meet at least 3)

• Leading or critical role at a distinguished organization

• Memberships requiring outstanding achievement (judged by experts)

• High remuneration relative to others in the field

• National or international awards for excellence

• Press coverage in respected publications or major media

• Authorship of scholarly articles in your field

• Original contributions of major significance

• Judging the work of peers

(Comparable evidence is allowed if these don’t fit your field.)

In practice, many undergraduates won’t reach this level until later; PhD students/graduates are more likely to qualify depending on the significance of their published work.
