What should I expect at a U.S. Port of Entry?

Your first stop is Customs and Border Protection (CBP). An officer reviews your passport, visa, and I-20/DS-2019, asks a few questions about the purpose of your travel to the U.S., admits you in F-1/J-1 status, and issues an electronic I-94.

 

What happens

  • The officer reviews your documents and asks about your studies and plans.

  • You may be sent to secondary inspection for additional review — common and usually not a problem.

  • You're admitted in F-1 or J-1 status and issued an electronic I-94.

Tips

  • Carry original immigration documents (not copies or digital copies) in your hand luggage so they're easy to present.

  • If sent to secondary inspection, stay calm, answer honestly, and have your school's international office contact info ready.
