Can I change my J-1 category?
Changing your J-1 category is rarely allowed. In-country category changes require U.S. Department of State approval, must be submitted by your institution through SEVIS, and are approved only in limited cases where the new category closely matches your original objective. Approval is not guaranteed.
Key rules
• You can’t request a category change yourself — your institution submits it.
• If filed before your DS-2019 expires, you stay in valid status while it’s pending; if denied, you remain in your current category until your end date plus the grace period.
• Short-Term Scholar cannot change to Research Scholar or Professor in the U.S. — that category is capped at 6 months and isn’t a bridge to longer categories. You’d end the program, depart, and apply for a new J-1 visa abroad.
Because in-country changes are uncommon, many scholars instead end their program, leave, and apply abroad — subject to either the J-1 12- or 24-month bars. Consult your international office early to discuss options.
