How much additional funding is required for each J-2 dependent?

You must show additional, documented funding for each J-2 dependent — to cover living expenses, health insurance, and related costs during their stay. The amount varies by your U.S. location and your sponsor’s requirements, and must be documented before each dependent’s DS-2019 can be issued.

What to know

• Your sponsor sets specific dollar amounts for a J-2 spouse and for each J-2 child.

• These amounts must be documented before dependent DS-2019s are issued.

• If your family plans to join you later, ask your sponsor early about the funding requirements so you can prepare documentation in advance.
