Can my J-2 family stay in the U.S. while I (the J-1) travel home?
In most cases, yes — your J-2 dependents can remain in the U.S. temporarily while you travel abroad briefly, as long as your J-1 program stays active, your absence is temporary and consistent with your program, and your dependents maintain valid J-2 status and health insurance. If you will be outside the U.S. for more than a few weeks, they should probably travel with you. If you do not have status in the U.S. because you have left the country, then technically they don’t have status either.
Important
• If you’ll be outside the U.S. for an extended period, or if your J-1 program ends, your dependents lose their status when yours ends (J-2 status is tied to your J-1 status).
• If they wish to remain in the U.S. in that situation, they should seek legal advice about whether another status is available to them.
