How do I bring my spouse and children to the U.S. on J-2 visas?
Eligible dependents can come with you or join later, if you show sufficient funding and they obtain J-2 visas. Your sponsor issues a separate DS-2019 for each dependent, and the process mirrors the J-1 visa process, except J-2 dependents do NOT pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
The process for each dependent
• Receive a DS-2019 issued by your sponsoring institution
• Complete the DS-160 online visa application
• Pay the visa application (MRV) fee (no SEVIS I-901 fee for J-2s)
• Attend a visa interview (if required) with: a valid passport, the DS-2019, the DS-160 confirmation, the fee receipt, proof of funding on the DS-2019, and proof of relationship (marriage or birth certificate)
Tip: Time the visa carefully. A visa issued too early can expire before travel, especially for countries with shorter validity periods. Plan funding early.
