Can my J-2 dependent children attend school in the U.S.?

Yes. J-2 children may attend public or private elementary and secondary (K-12) schools without restriction, and may attend college or university in J-2 status so long as they are under 21 years of age. They can’t work in J-2 status, and need their own status to stay past age 21.

K-12 school

J-2 children can attend public or private elementary and secondary schools freely.

College or university

J-2 children may attend college in J-2 status, but:

• They cannot work unless they change to another status, or successfully apply for a J-2 work card from USCIS.

• Some choose to change to F-1 status for longer-term degree programs.

• They must obtain their own status to remain in the U.S. after turning 21.

Tip: If your child plans to pursue a full degree, talk with your international office early about whether a change of status (e.g., to F-1) makes sense.
