Can my J-2 spouse work in the U.S.?

Yes. A J-2 spouse can apply to USCIS for employment authorization by filing Form I-765. They can begin work only after the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is approved and received. It's optional, not automatic, and not guaranteed.

The process

  •  File Form I-765 with supporting documents to USCIS.

  •  Wait for the EAD to be approved and in hand before starting work (processing times vary).

  •  Your international office can advise on the application.

Once authorized

  •  Full-time or part-time, any employer, any field.

But: J-2 income cannot be used to support the J-1 principal; work can't begin before the EAD start date; and authorization ends when the J-1 program ends. Working without an approved EAD violates status.
