What is the J-1 Specialist category?
The Specialist category is for experts with specialized knowledge or skills coming to the U.S. to observe, consult, or demonstrate techniques. It's a catch-all for specialized experts who don't fit Research Scholar, Professor, Short-Term Scholar, or graduate medical education — capped at 1 year.
Who and what it covers
Technical experts, subject-matter specialists, and professionals with unique expertise. The regulations cite examples like mass-media communication, environmental science, youth leadership, international educational exchange, museum exhibitions, labor law, public administration, and library science.
Requirements & limits
You must be a genuine expert in your field (education/experience expectations depend on the field).
You cannot use this category to fill a permanent or long-term position.
Maximum duration: 1 year. Permitted activities: observation, consultation, and demonstration of specialized skills.
Note: Government funding may subject you to the two-year home residency requirement (Regulation 212(e)).
