Reduced course load (RCL) in J-1 status

J-1 students must normally maintain a full course of study in fall and spring, but you may take fewer classes for specific reasons — only with your RO/ARO's approval before dropping below full-time.

When an RCL may apply

  • Vacation term — during an official break or summer, if you'll enroll full-time the next term

  • Medical reasons — recommended by a physician, with documentation provided to your RO/ARO

  • Academic reasons — recommended by your academic dean or advisor for a valid reason

  • Final term — when you only need a few credits to finish

Your school defines "full-time" (typically 12 credits undergrad / 9 grad) — confirm with your international office. Always talk to your RO/ARO first; dropping below full-time without authorization is a J-1 status violation with serious consequences.
