How much financial support do I need to demonstrate for a J-1 visa?
Before your program sponsor issues your Form DS-2019, you must show sufficient funds to cover your program and living expenses for your stay, health insurance costs, plus additional funds for any J-2 dependents. Your sponsor sets the specific amounts and acceptable documentation.
What you'll need to show
• Funds to cover tuition/program costs and living expenses for your program period
Funds to cover mandatory health insurance costs
• Additional funding for each J-2 dependent (spouse/children) who will accompany you
• Acceptable proof: recent bank statements, sponsor or scholarship documentation, government or organizational funding letters, or sometimes an employer salary letter
Because the J-1 is sponsor-administered, the required amounts and evidence are set by your program sponsor — confirm their exact figures before you apply.
