How much financial support do I need to demonstrate for an F-1 visa?

F-1 applicants must show enough funds to cover the first year of tuition and living expenses as listed on the Form I-20, plus proof that funding for later years is available.

Before your SEVP-certified school issues your Form I-20, you must show funds immediately available to cover at least one academic year of the school's Cost of Attendance (COA), with the expectation of sufficient funds thereafter. You'll show proof again at your visa interview.

What is Cost of Attendance (COA)?

COA is the school's estimated total cost for one academic year, including:

  •  Tuition and fees

  •  Housing and meals

  •  Books and supplies

  •  Health insurance (often required)

  •  Transportation and personal expenses

Schools should publish their official COA, so it's easy to find on the school's website.

What counts as proof?

Bank statements, a sponsor's documentation, scholarship or financial-aid letters, or sometimes an employer salary letter. Exact requirements vary by school — your international student office will confirm.
