What steps do I take to apply to a U.S. school?
Start 12–18 months ahead. Research SEVP-certified schools that fit your goals, confirm you can fund your studies, and complete each school’s application. After you’re accepted and you provide certain information to the school, the school issues a Form I-20 or DS-2019 which you will use to apply for your visa.
1. Research your options
Find a school that fits your academic, financial, and personal needs and goals. Consider degree level, field of study, institution size, public vs. private, location, cost, and your long-term goals. Schools must be SEVP-certified to enroll F, J, or M students — search the DHS "Study in the States" School Search (studyinthestates.dhs.gov/school-search).
2. Secure funding
Understand the full cost (tuition, fees, living expenses, health insurance, transportation) compared to what funds you have. Before a school issues your I-20 or DS-2019, you must show evidence of sufficient funds — bank statements, a sponsor's documentation, financial aid or scholarship letters, or an employer salary letter. Requirements vary by school.
3. Complete your application to the school
Common elements: academic transcripts/diplomas (with English translations and sometimes a formal credential evaluation, e.g. a NACES member), standardized test scores (academic and English proficiency), recommendation letters, and an essay/personal statement. Check each school's deadlines — U.S. undergraduate applications are typically due November–January for an August/September start.
Once accepted, your school issues a Form I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) to apply for your visa abroad or for a change of status from within the U.S.
