How early can I enter the U.S. before my program begins?
As an F-1 or J-1 student, you can enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date on your I-20 or DS-2019. This window gives you time to settle in, attend orientation, and prepare for classes.
Important
Don't enter earlier than 30 days on a different visa (such as a tourist visa). If you do, you'll have to leave and re-enter the U.S. on your F-1/J-1 visa before starting your academic program.
If you need to arrive more than 30 days early, consult your DSO/ARO first.
Continuing students who are transferring to a new school or changing academic levels are not bound by this 30-day entry window; it only applies to new students entering the U.S. on a new SEVIS record.
