Can I travel during the school year?
Yes. F-1 and J-1 students can travel during the academic year as long as you stay enrolled full-time, keep making normal academic progress, and get the ‘okay’ from school on any related absences. Travel is easiest during school breaks. Always check your immigration documents and talk to your DSO/ARO before finalizing travel plans.
Before you travel
Check dates - when are your classes, exams, grading, and/or other required duties for the term finished? When do required duties for the next term begin? Plan your travel dates to not conflict.
Check whether you'll need a new U.S. visa for your reentry and if so, allow time for processing.
Check whether you’ll need an entry or transit visa for wherever you’ll be travelling to
Talk with your DSO (F-1) or ARO (J-1) about any needed travel endorsement, visa renewal processes, etc.
Coordinate with professors/advisors if you might miss class or campus work.
Avoid international travel if
Your SEVIS record is terminated (unless traveling specifically to fix your status).
You're in a post-program grace period.
You have a pending OPT/STEM OPT application.
You're applying for a change of status or have a pending green card — consult an immigration attorney first.
Your visa has been revoked - consult an immigration attorney first
Your country of birth or citizenship is subject to an active visa ban
