What documents do I need to re-enter the U.S.?
Carry your valid passport, unexpired F-1/J-1 visa, and current I-20/DS-2019 with a valid travel signature in your carry-on. CBP officers decide admissibility at each entry, so complete documentation matters.
Always needed
Unexpired passport (valid for at least 6 months into the future)
Unexpired F-1 or J-1 visa (see exceptions)
Current I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) with a valid travel signature (printed, not digital copy)
You may also be asked for
Proof of financial support; academic records (enrollment verification/transcripts)
EAD card and proof of employment if on OPT or STEM OPT;
J-1: evidence of ongoing program
Visa exceptions
Citizens of Canada and Bermuda don't need a visa — present a valid passport and endorsed I-20/DS-2019.
Automatic Visa Revalidation (AVR): trips under 30 days to Canada, Mexico, or adjacent islands may allow re-entry on an expired visa
