Most common reasons a SEVIS record is terminated

Termination of a SEVIS record is uncommon and usually happens only when a student doesn't follow immigration requirements. Usually this results from a student dropping below full-time without authorization, not enrolling, working without authorization, or letting documents expire. A terminated record can cost you your lawful status.

 

Common reasons for SEVIS record termination

  • Dropping below full-time enrollment without prior authorization

  • Failure to enroll in classes

  • Failure to request a timely extension

  • Academic or disciplinary suspension

  • Working without proper authorization

  • Letting immigration documents (I-20, DS-2019) expire

  • Failing to make normal academic progress, or withdrawing without authorization

How to protect your status

  • Stay in close contact with your international office and know your DSO/ARO.

  • Read and respond to all immigration-related communications.

  • If you're struggling academically, medically, or financially, talk to your DSO/ARO before making changes — many issues can be resolved if addressed early.
