How long can I be outside the U.S. without affecting my status?
Short trips are usually fine. In general, you can be outside the U.S. up to 5 months during an authorized break and return on the same SEVIS record. More than 5 months, if you’re not on an approved study or research abroad program, can terminate your F-1 or J-1 record and require a new SEVIS record in order for you to return.
If you're away more than 5 months
Your SEVIS record may be terminated.
You'd need a new I-20 or DS-2019 to return — which restarts the one-academic-year requirement before you're eligible for CPT/OPT (F-1) or Academic Training (J-1).
Important: If you think you might be away longer than 5 months, talk with your DSO/ARO before you leave so they can explain your options.
