Can I visit Canada or Mexico without a valid visa stamp?

Sometimes, through Automatic Visa Revalidation (AVR). If you travel only to Canada, Mexico, or certain adjacent islands for 30 days or fewer, you may re-enter the U.S. on an expired visa, provided you meet all the conditions.

AVR conditions (all must be true)

• You travel only to Canada, Mexico, or certain adjacent islands on this trip

• Your trip is 30 days or less

• You have an unexpired passport with your previously issued nonimmigrant visa

• You have a valid DS-2019/I-20 with a current travel signature

• You did NOT apply for a new U.S. visa during this trip

• You are not a citizen of Cuba, Iran, North Korea, or Syria

Note: AVR eligibility can be complex — always confirm with your international office before relying on it.
