What can I do during my grace period?
The grace period - if being used as a grace period and not to apply for another eligible benefit - is for wrapping up and preparing to depart the U.S. without leaving immediately. You can travel within the U.S. and handle practical tasks — but you cannot work or continue program activities.
During this time you may
Make travel plans and pack
Close bank accounts, credit cards, and services
End housing arrangements and utilities
Say goodbye to friends and colleagues
Request reference or recommendation letters
Organize records you may need later
Travel within the United States for leisure
Your international office may offer a departure checklist. Note: this is for preparing to leave, not for continuing work or research.
Note that the grace period is also a time when F-1 students may still apply for certain benefits and updates, including:
Transferring your I-20 to begin a new program at a new school
Updating your I-20 to change program levels at your current school (for example MS to PhD)
Applying for OPT
