What is the 24-month bar to repeat participation in J-1 Research Scholar or Professor categories?

After you complete a J-1 Research Scholar or Professor program, you can’t begin a new J-1 program in either of those categories for 24 months, even if you didn’t use your full allowed time. It’s separate from the 212(e) two-year requirement, and it does NOT require you to leave the U.S., if you can change status to a different visa category.

Key points

• The 24 month bar is triggered by completing a Research Scholar or Professor program (any length).

• The 24 months start the day after your program end date, regardless of where you are.

• It only restricts the re-entry under the Research Scholar and Professor categories — you may still qualify for other J-1 categories (e.g., Short-Term Scholar, Student) or other visas, if otherwise eligible.

• Doesn’t apply to: continuous J-1 transfers to continue the same program with a new sponsor. It also does not apply to time in other J-1 categories.

• J-2 dependents who held J-2 during a spouse’s J-1 Research Scholar/Professor program are also subject to the bar.

Example: Finished a 2-year postdoc Research Scholar program 6 months ago? You must wait the remaining 18 months before a new Research Scholar/Professor program (a Short-Term Scholar role of ≤6 months may be an option, as it isn’t subject to the bar).
