Can I apply for post-completion OPT as an ABD (All But Defense) student?

Yes. PhD students who are "ABD" (All But Defense) — having completed all coursework and been admitted to candidacy, with only the thesis/research remaining — can apply for post-completion OPT at that point, not just after the degree is conferred.

How it works

  • Pre-completion OPT can be used before finishing your program — over vacation/breaks or part-time during the term.

  • Post-completion OPT can be approved after you graduate, or once you're ABD (admitted to candidacy, only thesis/research remaining).

  • Consult your DSO on which option fits your situation.

Important: You cannot roll pre-completion OPT into post-completion OPT automatically if you graduate mid-period. You'd end the pre-completion OPT employment, apply for post-completion OPT, and wait for it to be approved.
