What is the STEM OPT extension?

Students who complete a degree in a DHS-designated STEM field may qualify for an additional 24 months of OPT beyond the initial 12 months of OPT. It requires an I-765 application to USCIS, showing a qualifying job offer from an E-Verify participating employer, a DSO endorsed I-20 form, and a training plan (Form I-983).

 

Requirements

  • Your degree is in a DHS-designated STEM field

  • You work at least 20 hours per week

  • Your employer participates in the government's E-Verify program, and completes Form I-983 (training plan)

  • Each STEM OPT employer must be authorized and meet all reporting requirements
