When can I apply for post-completion OPT?
You can apply for post-completion OPT as early as 90 days before your I-20 end date and up to 60 days after your program ends. Apply early — you can't begin working until your EAD is approved and in hand.
Plan ahead
Contact your international office at the start of your final semester (or earlier) to learn your school's OPT recommendation procedures.
Some schools require you to complete an OPT workshop or info session before applying.
Apply early to allow for USCIS processing and reduce delays getting your EAD.
For what OPT is and the full application process, see "What is Optional Practical Training (OPT)?"
Note: A proposed federal rule may affect this process in August 2026— see the site's Recent Updates.
