When can I apply for post-completion OPT?

You can apply for post-completion OPT as early as 90 days before your I-20 end date and up to 60 days after your program ends. Apply early — you can't begin working until your EAD is approved and in hand.

 

Plan ahead

  • Contact your international office at the start of your final semester (or earlier) to learn your school's OPT recommendation procedures.

  • Some schools require you to complete an OPT workshop or info session before applying.

  • Apply early to allow for USCIS processing and reduce delays getting your EAD.
