What is the role of a J-1 program sponsor?
The J-1 program sponsor maintains your SEVIS record, issues and updates your DS-2019, authorizes program benefits (extensions, travel signatures, certain employment), and advises you on staying compliant with J-1 regulations. For J-1 students, the sponsor is usually your school, but it could be an outside agency such as IIE for Fulbright students, or ECFMG for physicians.
Your sponsor is responsible for:
Maintaining your SEVIS record
Issuing and updating your Form DS-2019
Authorizing program extensions, travel signatures, and certain benefits
Advising you on how to stay in compliance with J-1 regulations
Staying in close contact with your sponsor’s RO/ARO keeps your J-1 record accurate and helps you avoid immigration status problems.
