Under what conditions can I work off-campus?

Off-campus work always requires specific authorization. The four main options are J-1 Academic Training (AT), F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT), F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT), and F-1 Economic Hardship employment — each with its own eligibility and application process.

The main off-campus options?

• J-1 Academic Training (AT) — work experience related to your field of study

• F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) — internships integral to your curriculum

• F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) — work experience in your field, before or after graduation

• F-1 Economic Hardship employment — for severe, unexpected financial difficulty

Important: Working without proper authorization is a serious status violation that can terminate your SEVIS record and affect future visa applications. Always confirm authorization before starting any job.
